ABOUT US .......

Lorna Whiston Study Centres provides fun and effective classes for children and young people aged 1 to 16 years. There are around 1,000 students in the Malaysian centre, and the number continues to grow.

Mrs. Lorna Whiston’s philosophy is to provide top quality language programmes where students are given the opportunity to learn English in a meaningful way. The aim is to develop the potential of each student and to promote self-confidence and competence in the use of the English language.

Lorna Whiston Study Centre offers various programmes for children aged one to 16 years:
• Early Childhood Developmental Programmes for one to three year olds
• Pre-school Enrichment Programmes for four to six year olds
• Weekly Language Programmes for students in primary and secondary school

The centre also offers English as a Foreign Language programmes and Speech & Drama classes. Students are placed in classes according to their ability and level of language proficiency, and the programmes are tailored to their needs.

“Although our students start to improve in school English Language examinations within a few months of joining us, our teaching goal is more long term. We aim to provide students with the competence and confidence to communicate effectively in English throughout their lives. It’s no use having the brightest student enter university or his chosen career with great ideas if he doesn’t have the confidence or ability to put these ideas forward. Our students not only recognise the progress in their English language skills but also enjoy the classes immensely, and often stay with our programme for many years. Although our emphasis is on developing linguistic skills, we also help students to develop creativity and analytical thinking skills, as well as skills in communicating and problem solving,” explains Kay Bailey, Headteacher.

lornaKay leads a team of native English speaking teachers, who all have teaching degrees from universities in their home countries. They have a dedicated and professional approach to teaching, and work hard to make their programmes both enjoyable and educational.

Students at the centre enjoy a wide range of resources, including a library comprising more than 5,000 fiction and non-fiction books catering to various ability levels and interests. Teachers also use a wide range of computer software, audio-visual equipment and educational games and toys to motivate students to want to learn. A well-equipped indoor playground enables younger children to learn through physical play.

Groups are small, with no more than ten students in a class, meaning that each child can benefit from a lot of individual teacher attention and support. Lessons are always enjoyable, interactive and activity-driven to keep students motivated. Each class covers a specific theme, enabling children to join the programmes at any time during the year and not feel left out. Moreover, there is no written homework because everything is taught during class. Students simply take home two books to read after each lesson, providing a very enjoyable way for them to improve their language skills.

The programmes were developed by the company founder and Managing Director, Mrs. Lorna Whiston, along with her experienced team of Headteachers and teachers, all of whom possess a wealth of educational experience. In 1980, the first language centre was established in Singapore. There are now five language centres, a Speech & Drama Centre as well as a bilingual kindergarten in Singapore. The Malaysian centre, with quality programmes adapted to suit local needs, recently celebrated their 10th anniversary.
