Sometimes you need to do different things with the same old items. That star fruit just never looked like a decoration before now and take it a step further by using it to make a table setting. This is installation art at its best.

What you need:
- Fruit or vegetable that is wide enough to hold the candle you want to use. (Star fruit, lime, apple, lemon, orange, carrot, potato, pumpkin etc.)
- Paring knife
- Vegetable peeler
- Candle

What to do:
• If using a carrot or root vegetable, you may want to peel the outside layer of skin off.
• Cut to the height you want to use. At least as tall as the candle base.
• Cut the inside to make a hole that will fit the candle. It does take a little time to get the width and depth correct. Don’t rush or you may cut the sides out by mistake. With soft fruit like the star fruit you can insert a tooth pick into the base of the candle and then into the star fruit where you want it set.
• Drop the candle into the hole and set it on the table.
• Light the candle.

It is especially nice to use fruit and vegetables with table settings. The holidays offer lots of opportunities to use brilliant reds and greens. The green star fruit are lovely with red poinsettias. Candles set in red apples with green foliage are also perfect for the holidays. Yellow limes go with gold trimming and white flowers. You can just keep thinking of variations. The carrots and root vegetables are sturdier so you could carve a little more creatively if you are so inclined.
